The logs in the background have been replaced with aged logs therefore they are already gray as the owner wishes to leave them. This is a good time to use a borate treatment.
Powder post beetles, insects, and water damage have left about 2 to 3 inch deep and 18 to 20 inches long of rotten logs on this garage. Checking your home yearly for damage can save you time and money in the future. The earlier you find this the easier it is to remedy.
This is an example of traditional mortar mix which is very porous and over time will shrink causing it to separate from the logs allowing water to penetrate the wood thereby doing extensive damage to your home. Using the newer synthetic chinking which is stretches allowing it to move with the logs as they expand and contract.
This is a good example of what a bug infestation looks like. If you see any small holes like this then either you have or have had a bug infestation over the years. They do extensive damage and it is a good idea to treat your home with a borate treatment. Some bugs can hibernate for up to 24 months and until they eat the preservative treatments they usually keep coming back.
This is an example of the finished repairs if you will look under the garage window you will see the repairs are seamless.
A rotten log in which only the surface area has been affected so the top can be replaced with some log siding and treated with borate before reapplying stain. This log is stable throughout so it really isn't necessary to replace the log unless you just want to do so. The damage is small enough it should not hurt the house structurally.
The logs were repaired and half logs were put in their place. Full log replacements are available if they are needed. These logs were rather large in size and the owners provided the logs for this project. Thank you for viewing our photos.
